The Minnesota Twins gave catcher Ryan Jeffers a $23.15 million qualifying offer on November 2, giving him the choice of returning for 2027 or entering free agency.

The offer is a one-year contract. If Jeffers declines and signs with another team, Minnesota would receive a compensatory fourth-round pick in the 2027 draft. The qualifying offer is the Twins’ first major offseason decision, and Jeffers’ possible return carries both benefits and financial risk for the club.

Jeffers hit 128 wRC+ in 92 games in 2026. He missed several months after breaking a hamate bone and undergoing surgery. His defensive measures were mixed: he was average in blocks above average, but his caught-stealing-above-average figure was minus six, placing him in the third percentile.

The Twins’ pitching staff had a 4.42 ERA with Jeffers catching, lower than its ERAs with other catchers behind the plate. That could reflect the staff’s comfort with him, though his defensive work still leaves room to improve.

If Jeffers accepts, the $23.15 million salary would be a substantial commitment to one position. It could constrain spending elsewhere, including on a bullpen that needs improvement. The Twins have shown limited willingness to spend heavily in recent seasons.

Keeping Jeffers would give the team a chance to pursue a longer-term extension. If Minnesota is out of contention near the trade deadline, it could also consider dealing him for assets to help build for the future. The offer does not remove the need to strengthen other areas of the roster.
