Braden Smith Delivers in First Pacers Start

Indiana rookie Braden Smith scored 19 points and had 10 assists in his first NBA start on November 2, helping the short-handed Pacers challenge Atlanta in a four-point loss.
Braden Smith made the most of his first NBA start on November 2, recording 19 points, 10 assists, four rebounds and three steals as the Indiana Pacers fell to Atlanta by four points. The rookie point guard made 8 of 13 shots and played 42 minutes with Indiana missing 11 players.
Smith had an early turnover against Atlanta’s Dyson Daniels, who stole the ball, but recovered to deliver a strong performance against defenders including Daniels and Oklahoma City’s Lu Dort. His assists directly led to 25 points, and he created 22 additional potential assists.
Coach Rick Carlisle praised Smith’s effort on both ends of the court and said the guard’s offseason preparation had readied him for a lengthy shift. Smith had stood out in a pre-camp conditioning drill, Carlisle said, and his defense was also effective in the loss.
The opportunity came after Smith had spent much of his early NBA experience waiting for playing time. Indiana acquired him on the second night of the draft, and some fans questioned whether his size would translate to the league. He said the reduced role had taught him to work his way toward greater responsibility after being a leading player at Purdue.
Smith described facing top NBA defenders as enjoyable, despite the challenge. He also said the game differed from summer league play, which he characterized as less structured. His performance offered encouragement to Indiana fans as he continues developing, including through a season with the Noblesville Boom.
