Kucherov Seeks Trade From Tampa Bay Lightning

Nikita Kucherov has told the Tampa Bay Lightning that he does not plan to re-sign after this season and has asked to be traded. The 33-year-old winger is playing out an eight-year, $76 million contract.

The request is a major turn for a player who has spent his entire 13-season NHL career in Tampa Bay. Kucherov has helped the Lightning win two Stanley Cups and has led the league in scoring three times. He recently became the franchise’s career points leader.

Kucherov’s reasons for seeking a move have not been made public. He has shared his plans with the team and his teammates, while the Lightning and Kucherov’s agent have declined to comment.

Kucherov does not have a full no-trade clause and has provided a list of 10 destinations he would accept. That gives him a say in a potential deal, while leaving the Lightning to weigh whether they can secure a substantial return for a player who could otherwise leave as an unrestricted free agent after the season.

A trade is not guaranteed, and the timing remains uncertain. Tampa Bay must decide whether to move its leading scorer before his contract expires or keep him for the rest of the season as it pursues another championship.
