Cooley’s Late Hat Trick Goal Sends Mammoth Past Penguins

On October 29, Utah beat Pittsburgh 4-3 in overtime after Logan Cooley tied the game with a goal in the final second of regulation and Mikhail Sergachev scored in overtime.
Cooley scored twice in the first period to put Utah ahead 2-0, then completed his hat trick with 2.7 seconds remaining in regulation. Pittsburgh had taken a 3-2 lead just 25 seconds earlier, when Ben Kindel scored. Cooley knocked in a rebound to force overtime, where Sergachev scored at 3:27 to secure the Mammoth’s 4-3 win in Pittsburgh.
The hat trick was Cooley’s third in his career and his first NHL goals in his hometown. The 22-year-old had not scored in his first seven games this season, but has since scored seven times in seven games. He had six goals in four games entering Thursday’s contest.
Cooley grew up playing hockey in Pittsburgh and took part in Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins program at age five. He said his family’s support and sacrifices meant a great deal to him, and that having them watch the game was a chance to give something back.
Sebastian Cossa made 31 saves for Utah. Pittsburgh’s Rickard Rakell scored shorthanded, Erik Karlsson also found the net, and Artūrs Šilovs stopped 30 shots. Utah has won three of its past five games and has not lost consecutive games this season.
The Mammoth are scheduled to visit Philadelphia on Sunday. Pittsburgh’s next game is at Montreal on Saturday night.
