McGonigle Could Extend Tigers’ Rookie of the Year Pattern

On November 2, Detroit Tigers rookie Kevin McGonigle was named an American League Rookie of the Year finalist after an All-Star debut season. He will compete with Cleveland’s Parker Messick and Boston’s Payton Tolle, with the winner due to be announced November 9.
McGonigle made Detroit’s opening-day roster in 2026 and emerged as one of the team’s leading players. His first major-league season included an All-Star selection, 18 home runs, 28 doubles, a .278 batting average and a 7.1 WAR, earning him a place among the three finalists announced on November 2.
Detroit has had four American League Rookie of the Year winners: Justin Verlander, Mark Fidrych, Michael Fulmer and Lou Whitaker. Verlander won in 2006, followed by Fulmer in 2016, creating a decade-long gap between the franchise’s most recent victories. McGonigle could make it three Tigers wins spaced ten years apart.
He would also be Detroit’s first position player to take the honor since Whitaker won in 1978. McGonigle was the first rookie since Ted Williams in 1939 to record at least 97 runs, 28 doubles, 18 homers, 72 RBIs and 95 walks in a season.
The award decision is scheduled for November 9. If McGonigle wins, Detroit would receive an additional pick at the end of the first round of the next MLB Draft through the Prospect Promotion Incentive. McGonigle himself was selected in the first round, late in the round.
