Cardinals Acquire Eduardo Rivera From Red Sox

The St. Louis Cardinals acquired left-handed pitcher Eduardo Rivera from the Boston Red Sox for right-hander Juan Garcia on November 3, adding a 23-year-old who made his major-league debut in 2026.
St. Louis and Boston completed another trade on November 3, with the Cardinals receiving left-handed pitcher Eduardo Rivera and sending minor-league right-hander Juan Garcia to the Red Sox. Rivera is 23 and stands 6-foot-7, weighing 237 pounds.
Rivera appeared in four games for Boston in 2026, including three starts, and recorded a 6.30 ERA. In 26 minor-league outings, he posted a 2.59 ERA across 55 2/3 innings, striking out 71 batters and walking 30. He made five starts in those appearances.
At Triple-A, Rivera had a 2.96 ERA over 24 games, three of them starts. His fastball can approach 100 mph, and St. Louis could use him in relief or consider him for a starting role. A bullpen assignment appears the likelier fit.
Garcia, 18, logged 11 starts in the Dominican Summer League in 2026. He allowed a 4.40 ERA over 43 innings. The trade gives the Cardinals a pitcher with major-league experience in exchange for a teenage prospect who is still at an early stage of his development.
