Nationals Expected to Pursue Extensions for Wood and Abrams

On November 4, former general manager Jim Bowden said the Washington Nationals are expected to pursue offseason extensions with James Wood and CJ Abrams while remaining open to trade inquiries on their players.
The Washington Nationals are expected to try to secure long-term deals with outfielder James Wood and shortstop CJ Abrams this offseason, as the club looks to shape its roster for the future. Former general manager Jim Bowden said the team will also listen to trade inquiries involving all its players.
President of baseball operations Paul Toboni used 2026 to evaluate the major-league roster and the wider organization after taking charge last winter. The Nationals have already begun making changes, including moves to reduce their 40-man roster. They recently reached an extension with pitcher Cade Cavalli.
A deal with Wood could be challenging because he is represented by agent Scott Boras, who is known for favoring players reaching free agency. Washington had previously tried to extend Abrams under its former leadership. The scale of the new efforts and the likelihood of agreements remain unclear, with the two players in different positions in terms of their profiles and potential open-market value.
Abrams could be a trade candidate if extension discussions do not progress. Wood is viewed as much less likely to be moved, though the Nationals are expected to hear offers. Whether either player signs an extension remains to be seen.
