The Cincinnati Reds hired Joe Torres as their Major League pitching coach on November 4, 2026. He replaces Derek Johnson after five seasons as Cleveland’s assistant pitching coach.

The Cincinnati Reds hired Joe Torres as their Major League pitching coach on November 4, 2026, bringing in a coach who previously worked with manager Terry Francona in Cleveland. Torres takes over from Derek Johnson, who had held the Reds’ role since 2018 and will not return after taking a personal leave in June 2026.

Torres, 44, spent the past five seasons as the Guardians’ assistant pitching coach. He joined Cleveland’s organization in 2017 and helped develop several pitchers, among them Triston McKenzie, Hunter Gaddis, Gavin Williams and Tanner Bibee.

A former left-handed pitcher, Torres was the 10th pick in the 2000 draft, chosen by the Anaheim Angels. He spent 13 seasons in the minor leagues with five organizations, reached Triple-A and competed internationally for both Puerto Rico and Team USA.

Cincinnati had also considered internal candidates, while Carl Willis was among the names linked to the job. Willis is set to remain Cleveland’s pitching coach in 2027.

The Reds face further pitching decisions this offseason. Emilio Pagan has opted out, and Hunter Greene is injured. Chase Burns, who went 15-3 with a 2.86 ERA and 185 strikeouts in 29 starts over 154 1/3 innings, is expected to lead the rotation. Rhett Lowder, Brandon Williamson, Nick Lodolo and Andrew Abbott could also join the starting group or vie for a spot. Brock Burke and Pierce Johnson could also depart in free agency.
