Forsberg Expected to Leave Red Bulls After 2027 Sprint Season

Emil Forsberg has extended his Red Bull New York contract through the 2027 MLS sprint season and is expected to return to Sweden afterward. The 35-year-old midfielder is set to leave after the February-to-April season.
Red Bull New York captain Emil Forsberg is poised to move on from the club when the 2027 MLS sprint season concludes, heading back to his native Sweden. His contract had been scheduled to run out following the 2026 season, but he has agreed to stay through the short spring campaign, which runs from February to April.
The extension would give Forsberg the opportunity to join a Swedish top-flight club ahead of the 2027-28 season. MLS is introducing the sprint season as part of a shift to a schedule running from August through May, replacing its February-to-December calendar.
Forsberg, 35, joined New York after a successful career with German club Red Bull Leipzig and Sweden’s national team. He has captained the club and recorded 27 goals and 18 assists in all competitions. This season, he has four goals and eight assists in regular-season play.
He helped New York reach the 2024 MLS Cup Final, where the team lost to the LA Galaxy. The club is now trying to hold onto a playoff spot, with two regular-season games remaining after a 3-2 defeat to the New England Revolution on October 28.
