Spike Lee Urges Knicks to Skip White House Visit

On November 2, 2026, filmmaker and Knicks fan Spike Lee said he hopes the NBA champions will not visit President Donald Trump at the White House, arguing that team owner James Dolan cannot make them go.
The New York Knicks’ first NBA championship in 53 years has brought Spike Lee a new reason to celebrate—and a plea for the team to avoid a White House visit. Lee said he hopes the players will refuse the invitation, adding that owner James Dolan cannot force them to attend. The Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs in five games in June to win the title.
Lee’s comments came during a conversation that also touched on his Brooklyn film festival and his long devotion to the team. The Knicks’ offices at Lee’s production company are filled with basketball memorabilia, and he has followed the team through its championship run.
Dolan invited Trump to Game 3 of the Finals at Madison Square Garden, where the Spurs beat the Knicks 115-111. Lee said Trump’s attendance was “not just an accident,” after being told the team had won 13 straight playoff games before that loss. The remarks echoed speculation from some New Yorkers that Trump’s presence affected the result.
Elizabeth Pipko, a former Republican National Committee spokesperson, said players should not be forced to meet with anyone, but argued that sitting down with political opponents can help bring people together. She criticized Lee’s stance as putting opposition ahead of dialogue. New York’s team and the White House did not promptly answer comment requests.
