Early NBA Playoff Forecast Reflects Injuries and a Shifting East

A November 3 forecast projected the NBA’s 2027 postseason field, placing Detroit first in the Eastern Conference as injuries and uneven starts reshape the early-season outlook.
Detroit, Boston, Philadelphia, New York, Toronto and Cleveland make up the projected top six in the Eastern Conference. Atlanta, Miami, Orlando and Washington are forecast for the play-in positions. The projection is an early snapshot of a season the report describes as unusually unsettled, especially in a deep Eastern Conference.
The Thunder have been hit hard by injuries: Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace are expected to miss most or all of the season, while Chet Holmgren is expected to be out for at least two months. Injuries have also sidelined several other prominent players, including Anthony Edwards, Kawhi Leonard, Tyrese Haliburton, Paolo Banchero and Ja Morant.
Philadelphia has won seven of its first eight games and sits atop the East. The Sixers have six clutch wins, and rank among the league’s top five in defensive rating. Detroit has also started strongly despite Jalen Duren playing only 38 minutes, but the forecast says the Pistons need more shot creation and scoring to reduce the load on Cade Cunningham.
New York’s slow opening follows its championship season, though the projection still sees the Knicks’ starting lineup as a major strength. Toronto’s prospects are tied in part to Leonard’s availability, while Cleveland’s depth beyond its starting five remains a concern. Miami, meanwhile, is projected into the play-in group despite its under-.500 start alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The forecast is an initial installment of ongoing seeding predictions, with the season’s outcomes still difficult to call. The report notes that prediction models disagree on which team is best positioned to win the East.
