The Miami Heat fell to the Los Angeles Lakers on November 2, prompting coach Erik Spoelstra and players to acknowledge major defensive problems during the team’s 2-5 start.
Miami’s defensive struggles were central to the Heat’s loss to the Lakers on November 2. The team gave up 79 points in the first half, despite scoring 42 in the second quarter, and has fallen to 2-5 to open the 2026-27 season. Miami ranks 27th among 30 teams in defensive rating, and has struggled to stop drives and challenge opposing shooters across different defensive schemes.
Coach Erik Spoelstra said he was unhappy with the team’s defense and included himself in the responsibility for improving it. He said the players and coaching staff needed to work out how to get the group defending to its potential.
Guard Davion Mitchell said defense could not be accomplished by one player alone. He called for greater urgency, commitment to the game plan and a collective effort.
Bam Adebayo, a longtime anchor of Miami’s defense, said players needed to trust one another and communicate more consistently. He said fatigue can contribute to communication lapses and mistakes, and urged better focus in practice and at shootaround. Adebayo said the team could become strong defensively by turning individual ability into a coordinated unit.
