Craig Porter Jr. Faces a Fight for Cavaliers Rotation Minutes

On November 3, Craig Porter Jr. appeared at risk of losing his place in the Cleveland Cavaliers’ rotation as younger guards earned opportunities.
Cleveland’s early-season injuries have opened the door for several reserves, but the increased competition could leave fourth-year guard Craig Porter Jr. without a regular role once the Cavaliers are healthy. Meleek Thomas has impressed, while Tyrese Proctor has put together three strong performances in a row.
Porter played well in the offseason and preseason, but his game may be harder to fit alongside Donovan Mitchell and James Harden. He is most effective with the ball in his hands, and the team’s established guards are likely to limit those chances. Thomas and Proctor can create their own shots and contribute as catch-and-shoot options.
Coach Kenny Atkinson has used Porter in four games, totaling 32 minutes, in which he scored five points. Porter’s rebounding is a strength, but the report argues that his limited size and reliance on a particular offensive role put him at a disadvantage compared with the other guards.
Porter’s partial contract guarantee is scheduled for January 17. Cleveland could keep him until then or release him and use the resulting money to pursue a wing. The team has Thomas, Proctor and Sam Merrill among its bench guards, while Jaylon Tyson and Mario Hezonja are identified as its available wing depth. Porter’s future with Cleveland remains unsettled.
