Kansas coach Lance Leipold said on November 2 that quarterback Isaiah Marshall’s status for the Jayhawks’ upcoming game against UCF remains uncertain as he recovers from a lower-leg injury.

Marshall missed Kansas’ loss to TCU, his first absence this season, after being listed with a lower-leg injury. Leipold said the quarterback had moved better the night before but that the team would monitor his health through the week. He did not say who would start against UCF.

Cole Ballard started in Marshall’s place against TCU, his first start since 2023. Ballard threw for 285 yards and a touchdown, but a third-quarter interception returned for a touchdown proved costly in the defeat.

Kansas is 3-5 with one-third of its season remaining and needs to make a push for bowl eligibility. Marshall’s mobility and ability to create plays outside the pocket are important to the Jayhawks’ running game and passing attack. He has dealt with injuries during the season, but his absence against TCU was not apparent until he appeared on the injury report shortly before the game. The team held him out as a precaution after he was downgraded to questionable.

Leipold said the coaching staff would continue evaluating Marshall during the week before deciding on the quarterback for the UCF game.
