Jason Dowell Brings Energy to Missouri’s Defensive Line

On November 3, Missouri defensive tackle Jason Dowell was credited with helping anchor the Tigers’ defensive line through his production and leadership. He leads the group in tackles as Missouri limits opponents to fewer than 100 rushing yards per game.
Missouri’s four-man defensive tackle rotation has shared the workload closely this season, with each player recording between 205 and 253 snaps. The group includes Simpson, Gracial, Dowell and Marshall, each contributing in different ways: Simpson leads the group with six sacks, while Marshall and Gracial focus on stopping the run. Dowell leads the tackles in both playing time and tackles, with 18, and has added two sacks.
The sophomore’s teammates say his influence extends beyond the statistics. Safety Santana Banner described Dowell as a source of encouragement who leads team prayers before games. Simpson said Dowell lifts teammates when their energy dips, and pointed to his effort on the field as part of what makes him effective against both the pass and run.
Dowell’s celebrations after plays are another visible part of his personality. He said their movements draw inspiration from anime characters associated with persistence and hard work, as well as mixed martial artist Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson. Dowell said the gestures reflect a determination to keep pushing himself.
Missouri has held opponents below a 100-yard rushing average each game, placing third in the Southeastern Conference. Dowell has credited former Tiger Chris McClellan, teammates Marshall and Gracial, and coaches Eli Drinkwitz and David Blackwell with helping him develop. He said the defensive tackles support one another rather than competing for recognition.
