Stafford Jokes About Donald’s Missed Fumble Chance

Matthew Stafford defended Aaron Donald after the Rams defensive star failed to recover a fumble during Los Angeles’ 24-9 win over the Chargers on November 1.
The 35-year-old Donald had a chance to pick up a loose ball and run it in for a touchdown during the Rams’ victory. He could not secure it, and the moment drew a sympathetic reaction from quarterback Matthew Stafford, who is 38 and turns 39 in February.
In a mic’d-up video shared by the NFL on X on November 2, Stafford watched a replay and joked that bending down to reach the ball gets harder with age. He then told a Rams assistant coach he needed an official timeout to retrieve some of the loose balls himself.
Donald has never scored an NFL touchdown, and the fumble presented an unusually promising opportunity. Stafford, by contrast, has thrown 463 career touchdown passes and scored 18 more on rushing plays. He could relate to the physical challenge of getting down to the ball, though the missed chance left Donald without a rare shot to score.
