With David Montgomery’s return from a groin injury not imminent, Houston could rely on Woody Marks again against the Chargers in Week 9.

Houston Texans running back Woody Marks could be in line for another heavy workload against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 9, with veteran David Montgomery still recovering from a groin injury that has kept him out since Week 5. Montgomery’s rehabilitation is progressing, but a return is not imminent. Coach DeMeco Ryans said Monday the team had no significant update and would evaluate him through the week.

Houston has three practices before facing Los Angeles. If Montgomery can take part, the Texans could consider bringing him back. If he remains sidelined, Marks is positioned to continue leading the backfield.

Marks has recorded at least 18 touches and played at least 77% of Houston’s offensive snaps in each of the past three games. Against the New York Giants, he took 88% of the snaps and finished with more than 20 touches and 80 all-purpose yards. He briefly left that game with an injury.

The Chargers have allowed at least 11 rushing touchdowns this season and rank among the league’s 10 most generous teams in rushing yards allowed per game. Their run-stuff rate is the NFL’s lowest, at 11.8%. Opponents have run on them on more than half of their plays, though the Chargers’ 0-7 record has often left them facing teams with a lead.

If Houston can get ahead and keep the ball moving on the ground, Marks could have another productive outing. The Texans are also seeking to avoid giving the winless Chargers their first victory of the season.

Players: David Montgomery, Woody Marks
