Four Free Agents Who Could Shape the Yankees’ Offseason

On November 3, the New York Yankees’ offseason priorities included re-signing closer David Bednar and pursuing three other free agents to strengthen their roster for 2027.
The Yankees have several roster decisions to make as they look to build a team capable of advancing further in the 2027 postseason. Four free agents stand out as potential additions: reliever David Bednar, catcher Ryan Jeffers, Japanese third baseman Teruaki Sato and left-handed reliever Adrián Morejón. The team may also need trades to address infield and outfield needs.
Bednar recorded 35 saves in 39 chances and a 2.47 ERA over 69 1/3 innings in 2026. The Yankees have offered him a one-year, $23.15 million qualifying offer, but he is expected to seek a multiyear deal. Keeping him would help fill the closer role as other bullpen arms could leave. Morejón, 27, posted a 2.83 ERA and struck out 107 over 86 innings for San Diego, offering another possible bullpen addition.
Jeffers hit .256 with 14 home runs and an .814 OPS for Minnesota. His bat could improve the Yankees’ catching depth, though he may prefer a starting role. If he is not a fit, Carson Kelly is presented as an alternative, particularly against left-handed pitching. Austin Wells remains part of the catching picture.
Sato, 27, won Japan’s Central League Triple Crown in 2026, batting .306 with 39 home runs and 106 RBIs. He could address third base, but adding him may prompt the Yankees to consider trading Ryan McMahon, and his transition to MLB pitching and long-term defensive position remain questions. Sato was posted on November 1, opening a 45-day negotiating period. The current collective bargaining agreement is due to expire in early December, adding urgency to negotiations.
