Diamondbacks Trim 40-Man Roster to 33 as Free Agency Opens

The Arizona Diamondbacks made several roster changes as MLB free agency began on November 3, leaving the team with 33 players on its 40-man roster.
On November 3, Arizona restored Tyler Locklear, Cristian Mena and Andrew Saalfrank to its 40-man roster after their time on the 60-day injured list. The Diamondbacks’ roster now stands at 33 players as the major league offseason gets underway.
Locklear, an infielder, appeared in 15 major league games this season, recording a .278 batting average and .801 OPS across 42 plate appearances. He had been sidelined by a fractured right thumb and is expected to be healthy for 2027. Pitcher Mena missed the year after a shoulder injury led to surgery, while left-hander Saalfrank had offseason surgery on his left shoulder labrum.
Infielder Pavin Smith was removed from the 40-man roster on November 2 and became a minor league free agent. He elected free agency after finishing the season with a .556 OPS. Pitcher Michael Soroka declined his mutual option on October 30 and is also a free agent. He posted a 3.41 ERA in 116 innings in 2026, his strongest season since 2019.
Arizona’s other free agents include pitchers Taylor Clarke, Zac Gallen, Kevin Ginkel, Jonathan Loaisiga, A.J. Puk, Dennis Santana and Ryan Thompson, along with catcher James McCann and infielder Ildemaro Vargas. Clarke, McCann, Vargas and Santana appear to be the likeliest candidates to return. The team could pursue Soroka, though a potentially lower payroll for 2027 may limit what it can offer.
