Phillies Could Trade a Starter to Address Roster Needs

The Philadelphia Phillies are weighing how to improve after another postseason exit, with a starting pitcher trade among the options discussed for the offseason beginning November 4, 2026.
Philadelphia reached the postseason again in 2026 but did not meet its aims, extending a run of early playoff exits after reaching the World Series in 2022 and the National League Championship Series in 2023. The club’s lineup had several gaps, while its bullpen faltered late in the season.
The Phillies have a strong starting rotation, but their payroll is already high and their farm system is not especially deep. Trading a starter could be a way to bring in help for other parts of the roster or reduce financial commitments.
Zack Wheeler is considered an unlikely trade candidate because he is entering the final year of his contract and carries a high salary. Dealing Cristopher Sanchez or Jesus Luzardo would be a more dramatic move; their production and contracts could make either pitcher valuable in a trade.
Aaron Nola could be easier to move after a stronger 2026 season, although Philadelphia might need to retain some of his salary or accept little in return. Trading rookie Andrew Painter could mean giving up on a promising pitcher before his value is fully established, after a season with mixed results.
The team could also consider promoting Gage Wood if it believes he is ready for the majors, or adding a pitcher through free agency. A rotation trade is presented as one possible approach, rather than a settled plan.
