Nets Face a Leadership Dilemma Between Randle and Porter

The Brooklyn Nets are 1-6 after seven games, with Julius Randle and Michael Porter Jr. nearly even in scoring and shots taken. Coach Jordi Fernandez must find a way to establish a late-game leader as the team tries to turn around its season.
Brooklyn has won once in its first seven games, leaving the Nets tied for the league’s fewest victories. The slow start has sharpened a question about who should lead the team offensively after its offseason trade for Julius Randle brought another top scoring option alongside Michael Porter Jr.
In the figures cited for the season’s opening games, Randle averages 20.9 points and Porter 20.7. Each takes 15.1 shots per game, leaving little statistical separation between them and no obvious order at the top of the offense.
That balance could give coach Jordi Fernandez a difficult decision: which player should the Nets turn to late in close games and during stretches when the team needs someone to carry the offense? Randle has previously been a leading option in a similar role, while Porter may be the more talented scorer at this stage of their careers.
The pair have shown they can play together and are combining for more than 40 points a game. But with Brooklyn struggling, the absence of a clear first option could become a continuing challenge as the Nets seek to improve and move toward the postseason race. The team’s season is still early, leaving time to work out the roles.
