Franklin expects offensive line reinforcements for SMU matchup

Virginia Tech coach James Franklin said on November 2 that two experienced offensive linemen are expected back for the Hokies’ November 6 game at SMU in Dallas.
Virginia Tech will travel to Dallas to play SMU on November 6, following its bye week. Coach James Franklin said both Montavious Cunningham and Brody Meadows should be back, bolstering a line that has dealt with injuries. Cunningham has worked at both guard and tackle, and the staff is still deciding where to use him. Left tackle Justin Terry is not ready to return.
Franklin said the added experience should help against an SMU defense that uses twists, stunts and pressure packages. He stressed the need to run effectively and avoid long third-down situations.
The coach also pointed to better defensive communication and pre-snap execution in Virginia Tech’s 20-16 win over Clemson. He said players have grown more comfortable in the system, while coaches have trimmed parts of the defensive package.
Franklin warned that SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings brings accuracy, athleticism and experience. Jennings has completed 185 of 251 passes this season for 2,414 yards, 21 touchdowns and five interceptions. Franklin also singled out running back Kendrick Raphael as a player the Hokies must contain, noting SMU’s offense makes defenses cover the entire field.
