Virginia Tech Ranks Third in ACC After Open Week

Virginia Tech remained third in the ACC rankings during its open week, with Miami and Wake Forest leading the conference on November 3. The Hokies are set to visit sixth-ranked SMU on Friday.
Miami and Wake Forest have separated themselves from the rest of the ACC after nine weeks of football, while Virginia Tech sits third in the conference rankings despite not playing last week. The Hokies’ open week coincided with results that shifted the picture around them, including Syracuse’s win over SMU and Wake Forest’s 51-7 victory over Virginia.
Miami is 8-0 overall and 6-0 in ACC play, holding the top spot. Wake Forest, ranked second, is 7-1 overall and 5-1 in the conference. The rankings describe both teams as leading contenders, with Wake Forest scheduled to face SMU on November 14.
Virginia Tech is 6-2 overall and 3-2 in ACC play. Its next game is a Friday visit to Dallas to take on SMU, which fell to Syracuse and stands sixth at 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the conference. A Hokies win could improve their position in the conference race and strengthen their hopes of reaching the ACC Championship Game.
Syracuse, ranked ninth, beat SMU with a go-ahead touchdown 17 seconds before the end. The Orange are 4-4 and need two more wins to become bowl-eligible. Duke moved to fourth after routing Boston College 47-2, while Louisville, Pitt and Clemson rounded out the rankings’ top eight.
