Lea Sees Curtis Improving as Vanderbilt Seeks a Rushing Identity

Vanderbilt coach Clark Lea said freshman quarterback Jared Curtis has continued to improve after the team’s bye week, as the Commodores prepare to visit Mississippi State on November 3.
Vanderbilt coach Clark Lea said Jared Curtis is making progress as the freshman quarterback prepares for the Commodores’ road game against Mississippi State on November 3. Curtis last played in Vanderbilt’s loss at Kentucky, which Lea considered one of his cleaner performances this season despite mistakes.
Lea said Curtis needs to protect the ball, reduce pre-snap errors and improve how he communicates and runs the offense. He also reaffirmed that Curtis is growing into a leadership role, with veteran teammates giving him room to guide the offensive group.
Vanderbilt’s struggles on the ground have added to the pressure on Curtis. The Commodores managed 15 rushing yards on 17 attempts against Kentucky. Running backs Sedrick Alexander and MK Young combined for two yards on six carries.
Lea said Vanderbilt needs a more dependable rushing identity, not necessarily a high yardage total, so the offense can ease the burden on its quarterback and stay on schedule. He said improving the run game was a priority during the bye week, but the task will be difficult against a Mississippi State defense ranked 32nd nationally in rushing yards allowed per game.
