Jets’ Defensive Collapse Puts Brandon Stephens Under Scrutiny

The New York Jets lost 38-33 to the Las Vegas Raiders at MetLife Stadium on November 1, extending their losing streak to three games as defensive struggles and penalties continued.
The Jets scored on each of their first six possessions against Las Vegas but still lost, 38-33, on November 1. The defeat dropped New York to 2-6 and marked another setback for a defense that has given up 92 points over its past three games, after allowing 95 across its first five.
A costly third-down penalty on cornerback Brandon Stephens helped the Raiders extend a drive and score in the third quarter. Another penalty on a third-down play also kept Las Vegas moving, and the Raiders scored on all four of their trips to the red zone. Coach Aaron Glenn said the team would address the penalties and work on the technique behind them.
The Jets have gone two straight games without a takeaway and have recorded only one interception this season. Against the Raiders, they allowed tight end Brock Bowers to make seven catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Kirk Cousins threw three touchdown passes and ran for another; New York sacked him once.
Stephens has been penalized five times this season, four of those flags coming in the past five games. He was penalized three times last season. A potential trade has been raised as an option if his mistakes continue, though the Jets could also keep him and assess his play further. The team faces the Kansas City Chiefs next, followed by the Buffalo Bills.
Players: Kirk Cousins, Brandon Stephens, Brock Bowers
