ESPN Surprises Marcus Spears With Son’s Texas Basketball Debut

ESPN surprised NFL analyst Marcus Spears with live footage of his son’s college debut for Texas in Austin on November 2. The freshman scored 11 points in the Longhorns’ 109-59 win over Chicago State.
On November 2, ESPN’s Monday night football broadcast briefly turned to Texas basketball, showing freshman Marcus Spears Jr. entering Austin’s Moody Center ahead of his college debut. The footage surprised his father, ESPN analyst Marcus Spears, who was working on the broadcast of the Bears-Seahawks game.
Spears smiled, slapped the desk and became emotional as he watched. He said his son had worked hard to reach this point and that he had considered skipping the football broadcast to attend the game in person. He had been able to watch Texas play an exhibition against St. John’s the previous weekend, but had been disappointed he would miss the debut in Austin.
The elder Spears said he was glad to be with his colleagues, while his thoughts remained with his son. He added that he and his wife had prepared the younger Spears for this moment and trusted him to handle it.
The 6-foot-9 forward scored 11 points on 4-for-7 shooting, grabbed five rebounds, had one assist and blocked four shots in Texas’ 109-59 victory. Afterward, the freshman said he still had work to do and viewed the game as a first step. He is ranked fourth nationally in the 2026 SportsCenter Next 100. His sister, Cari Spears, plays volleyball for Texas.
