Oklahoma promoted tight ends coach Jason Witten to interim offensive coordinator after dismissing Ben Arbuckle, giving the former Dallas Cowboys star a chance to call plays.

Jason Witten has been named Oklahoma’s interim offensive coordinator after the team dismissed Ben Arbuckle. Witten joined the Sooners this year as their tight ends coach, following a successful run as a high school coach at Liberty Christian School, where he won multiple state championships.

The promotion gives Witten an opportunity to demonstrate his playcalling ability. He spent 17 seasons in the NFL, including 16 with Dallas, and finished with 1,228 catches for 13,046 yards and 74 touchdowns. He missed just one game because of injury during his playing career.

Witten was known as a physical tight end who blocked and served as a reliable target for his quarterback. He was also regarded as a vocal leader who held teammates accountable.

Dallas owner Jerry Jones previously interviewed Witten during the Cowboys’ search for a head coach ahead of the 2025 season. Jones said Witten had the qualities to become a top coach and compared him to Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell.

Witten’s work as a playcaller could figure into a future opportunity with Dallas. The report raised the possibility of him joining Brian Schottenheimer’s staff or potentially being considered as a replacement, but no such move has been announced.
