Panthers Urged to Consider Trade for Josh Downs

On November 3, Carolina was urged to pursue Indianapolis Colts receiver Josh Downs, who has requested a trade, despite the Panthers’ needs on the offensive line and defense.
The Carolina Panthers have been urged to consider trading for Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Josh Downs, even though receiver is not among their most pressing needs. Downs has requested a trade, and his proximity to Carolina’s region and college ties to UNC make the fit especially notable.
The Panthers recently opened a 21-day window for Xavier Legette to return. Tetairoa McMillan and Jalen Coker have also played well, while John Metchie and Brycen Tremayne have contributed. Carolina’s more evident needs are at left tackle, center and right guard, as well as across the defensive line, at edge and cornerback.
The case for adding Downs is that a receiver who gets open quickly could help Bryce Young deal with pressure. Carolina struggled to find answers when Green Bay brought pressure, while the Packers used quick routes to counter it. Downs could give Young a reliable short option and help the offense respond to blitzes.
Downs also offers a different matchup option. He has the seventh-most receiving yards in the NFL against man coverage, while McMillan and Coker have been more effective against zone, making the receivers a potentially complementary group.
The Panthers’ offensive line remains a concern, but a receiver may be easier to acquire than a left tackle or right guard. The argument for Downs is that he could address some of the pressure on Young while adding another way for Carolina to attack opposing coverages.
