Jets Urged to Give Nahshon Wright a Week 9 Chance

On November 3, a case was made for the New York Jets to play cornerback Nahshon Wright against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 9, both to test his defensive impact and potentially raise his trade value.

Wright, who agreed to a one-season contract with New York after recording five interceptions and earning his first Pro Bowl selection with the Chicago Bears last season, has barely featured on defense. The 28-year-old has been a healthy scratch in four games and has played three, with all 22 of his snaps coming on special teams. The Jets entered Week 9 with a 2-6 record.

New York has recorded just one interception in its last 25 games, and Wright also recovered three fumbles last season. His coverage has had weaknesses, but he could offer a chance to generate turnovers. The Jets are also dealing with inconsistent play from Brandon Stephens, while rookie D’Angelo Ponds is still developing. Wright played 36 slot snaps last season, a career high, despite spending most of his career on the outside.

The Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes has thrown four interceptions in seven games this season, including two in his last three. He also threw two picks against the Jets in 2023. Giving Wright snaps against Kansas City could test whether he can contribute, and might improve his appeal to another team.

The NFL trade deadline is November 10, and the Chiefs game is the Jets’ final matchup before it. Wright’s contract is affordable, with a deal requiring a reported $833,333 in cap space. If New York plans to move veterans, a strong performance could help the team seek a better late-round pick rather than lose him after the season.

Players: Patrick Mahomes, Nahshon Wright, Brandon Stephens, D'Angelo Ponds
