Tampa Bay’s Run Game Could Test the Bears’ Defense

The Bears face Tampa Bay at Soldier Field on November 8, with the Buccaneers’ powerful rushing attack posing a challenge after Chicago’s 34-17 win on November 2.
Chicago’s 34-17 victory over the defending Super Bowl champions on November 2 was a major result for coach Ben Johnson’s team. But Johnson urged the Bears to focus on their next game: Tampa Bay, which visits Soldier Field on November 8.
The Buccaneers are coming off a striking win over Atlanta in which they attempted just three passes, completing none, yet rushed for 324 yards. Their ground game has gained 728 yards this season, and they rank first in the NFL in rushing. Bucky Irving leads the attack, with Kenneth Gainwell another option behind a strong run-blocking line.
That strength could target a concern for Chicago. The Bears have improved against the run, but remain 22nd in yards allowed per carry. They gave up 81 yards on 19 attempts against Seattle, and the Seahawks produced several runs of more than 10 yards. Tampa Bay ranks third in time of possession, making a run-heavy, clock-controlling approach a plausible threat.
Chicago’s defensive line could also be short-handed. Groin and knee injuries to Grady Jarrett and Kentavius Street could mean more work for rookies Jayden Loving and Jordan van den Berg. Jeffery Simmons played 87% of the snaps against Seattle after the injuries, more than the Bears had intended.
The Bears’ offense may face pressure of its own: Tampa Bay blitzes on 33.6% of plays, the fifth-highest rate in the league. Chicago could also miss running back Kyle Monangai, who remains out with toe and finger injuries. The Bears have averaged 105 rushing yards in four games without him, compared with 196.2 in four games with him. If Tampa Bay limits Chicago’s ability to control the game, the Bears may need Caleb Williams and the passing attack to carry more of the load.
