Hellebuyck Cites Family Circumstances in Winnipeg Departure

Devils goaltender Connor Hellebuyck said family circumstances helped prompt his move from Winnipeg, explaining his decision in a letter to Jets fans on November 4.
Connor Hellebuyck said difficult family circumstances were among the reasons he sought a move from Winnipeg, addressing Jets fans in a letter on November 4. The 33-year-old goaltender said he and his family decided after careful consideration that a change was best, but would keep the personal details private and asked for respect for that choice.
Hellebuyck’s departure followed his trade request and refusal to report to the Jets’ training camp, which led to a suspension. Winnipeg traded him to the New Jersey Devils in October. The Jets had drafted him in 2012, and he spent 11 seasons in Manitoba.
The trade request drew an unfavorable reaction from some Winnipeg fans, who saw it as Hellebuyck abandoning the team. The Jets placed seventh among Central Division clubs last season, earning 82 points, a year after posting the NHL’s best regular-season record and winning the Presidents’ Trophy.
Hellebuyck thanked Jets supporters and said he was proud to represent Winnipeg. He also recalled enjoying Manitoba’s lakes and outdoor life, especially fishing. He wished the team and the community well.
