Ilya Nabokov Makes Strong Case as Colorado’s Goalie of the Future

On November 4, 2026, Ilya Nabokov’s strong start with the Colorado Eagles has raised the possibility that he could join the Avalanche next season. The 2024 draft pick has posted top AHL numbers after a decorated KHL career.
Nabokov has gone 4-2-2, stopping 93.1% of shots and allowing an average of 2.11 goals per game in seven games for Colorado’s AHL affiliate. Among AHL goalies who have played at least seven games, he has the highest rate of saves and the second-lowest goals-per-game average. His play has moved him into the Eagles’ starting role as Trent Miner deals with injuries.
The Avalanche selected Nabokov 38th overall in 2024. Before moving to North America, he played five seasons in the KHL, stopping 91.9% of shots and allowing 2.35 goals per game across 135 regular-season games. In 35 playoff appearances, he stopped 93.0% of shots and allowed an average of 2.01 goals per game, and won the Gagarin Cup as playoff MVP. He also received the KHL’s top rookie award and made its first all-star team.
At six feet one inch, Nabokov combines athleticism and quick glove work with effective movement around the crease. The Avalanche could face a decision this summer: Scott Wedgewood is set to become an unrestricted free agent, while Nabokov is a restricted free agent. If Nabokov sustains his performance, Colorado could consider him as a backup to Mackenzie Blackwood next season. Blackwood is under contract for three more seasons after this one, and the team will also weigh other contract needs and the rising salary cap.
