Denver Barkey scored his first goal of the season in Philadelphia’s 4-2 loss to Minnesota on November 3, as his work in the high slot helped energize the Flyers’ power play.

Philadelphia lost 4-2 to Minnesota on November 3, but Denver Barkey’s first goal of the season offered a positive sign for a Flyers power play that has improved in recent weeks. The 21-year-old scored from the high-slot “bumper” position during a third-period advantage, finishing a pass from Porter Martone after moving into an open lane.

Barkey has taken on the role since returning from an injury that kept him out at the start of the season. His work supporting teammates and keeping loose pucks in play has helped the top unit build more consistent attacks, winger Trevor Zegras said. Coach Rick Tocchet has also praised Barkey’s contribution to sustaining plays and recovering pucks.

The Flyers have converted 16.7% of their power plays this season. Since earning their first win on October 17, however, they have scored on seven of 28 opportunities, a 25% success rate that ranks 15th in the NHL over that stretch. Barkey had two dangerous chances on Tuesday before scoring on his second opportunity.

Philadelphia tried Martone and Travis Konecny in the bumper spot before settling on Barkey. Martone now fits better along the wall, while the top unit also features Zegras, Jamie Drysdale and Matvei Michkov. Barkey said he is working to shoot more from the middle, believing that threat can open passing options. The Flyers begin a five-game road trip against the Rangers on Thursday.
