Flyers’ veterans call out effort after third straight loss

The Philadelphia Flyers lost 5-2 to the Washington Capitals on October 28, extending their skid to three games. Captain Sean Couturier and teammate Nick Seeler criticized the team’s physicality and commitment.
The Flyers fell to 3-8-4 after losing 5-2 in Washington on October 28. The defeat was their third in a row, and frustration was plain afterward as veteran players questioned the team’s effort in battles and its willingness to defend the puck.
Captain Sean Couturier said the team had been too easy to push off the puck and needed to compete harder. Seeler, who helped set up Couturier’s second-period goal, said players needed to prioritize the team over personal statistics and play for one another from the opening faceoff.
Coach Rick Tocchet agreed that the club needed more determination in key moments. He said the Flyers were not defending as well as they had the previous season and had to keep reinforcing stronger defensive play and effort in puck battles.
The loss followed a back-to-back set and added to a run of games in which the Flyers have struggled to start strongly and maintain connected play. Their 3-8-4 record is the worst in the Eastern Conference, and the public criticism from players and their coach underscored the team’s growing concerns.
Tocchet said the responsibility rested within the team, and that coaches and players would continue working on defending and competing harder. Seeler said the Flyers could become a better team if they began playing for one another from the start.
