Trevor Megill Named Finalist for NL Reliever Award

Milwaukee Brewers closer Trevor Megill was named a finalist for the National League Trevor Hoffman Award on November 3, after helping the club win its first championship.
Trevor Megill is one of three finalists for the Trevor Hoffman Award, which recognizes the National League’s top reliever. The Brewers closer joins Jhoan Duran and Mason Miller on the ballot. The winner is set to be announced on November 11.
Megill, 32, completed his third season as Milwaukee’s primary closer with a 2.63 ERA, a 1.85 FIP and 30 saves in 61⅔ innings. He struck out 69 batters. The Brewers won 103 games and went on to claim their first championship, with Megill on the mound when they clinched the title.
In the postseason, manager Craig Counsell relied on Megill, Abner Uribe and Aaron Ashby for high-leverage outs. The trio recorded 38⅔ innings and 42 strikeouts. Megill works mainly with a fastball averaging 97.9 mph and a knuckle curve; his fastball’s velocity and movement helped limit damaging contact.
Miller and Duran are viewed as the leading contenders, while Megill is considered likely to finish third. The award’s voters, drawn from 30 regional Baseball Writers’ Association chapters, rank five relievers in each league. Megill may have received much of the third-place support among the finalists. Miller is considered the likely winner. Megill also earned the win in Game 2 of the National League Division Series, in which Milwaukee handed Miller a loss.
