Cubs Could Find a Trade Fit in Seattle’s Pitching Depth

On November 4, the Chicago Cubs emerged as a potential trade partner for the Seattle Mariners, who are open to moving pitchers in exchange for a bat.
Seattle finished the 2026 season 76-86, third in the AL West, and is preparing for an offseason overhaul after dismissing manager Dan Wilson and several coaches. The Mariners have indicated they may trade from their pitching depth to add a hitter, creating a possible opening for Chicago, which is looking to strengthen its rotation and bullpen.
The clubs now share a connection: Seattle hired Jason Kanzler as manager after he worked for the Cubs as their director of player development. Kanzler also has coaching experience with Houston. His familiarity with Chicago’s roster and farm system could help inform conversations between the teams, though a deal remains only a possibility.
Potential pitching targets include Logan Gilbert, who recorded 200 strikeouts for the second time in his career. George Kirby, an All-Star in 2023, is another candidate; he went 9-11 with a 4.33 ERA in 2026. Both could strengthen Chicago’s starting staff.
Bryan Woo and Bryce Miller could appeal to the Cubs because of their remaining team control. Woo is controlled through 2030, while Miller is controlled through 2029. Chicago could offer a major-league-ready player such as Matt Shaw or an early-round draft selection such as Kane Kepley, but no specific trade terms or negotiations were disclosed.
