Red Sox Add Shelley Duncan to Chad Tracy’s Coaching Staff

The Boston Red Sox are hiring Shelley Duncan, the Yankees’ Triple-A manager, for a major league coaching role as they build Chad Tracy’s staff for 2027.
Duncan, 47, is joining the Red Sox in a role that has not yet been specified. His addition is the second recent hire as Boston assembles its coaching staff for 2027; the team also brought on Jason Bell as an outfield instructor.
Duncan led New York’s highest-level minor league club, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, for the past four seasons. That made him a counterpart to Tracy, who managed Worcester before Boston promoted him to the major league job in April.
Tracy has said he hoped other minor league managers would receive opportunities in the majors, and praised the baseball knowledge and work of managers he faced in the International League.
Duncan comes from a baseball family. His father, Dave Duncan, spent about 50 years in professional baseball, primarily as a pitching coach. His brother, Chris Duncan, spent portions of five seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals.
A Yankees second-round draft pick in 2001, Shelley Duncan played in the majors for New York, Cleveland and Tampa Bay before moving into coaching and managing in 2015. He has also held major league coaching positions with Toronto and the Chicago White Sox. Boston still had at least two staff vacancies: first base coach and third base coach.
