Red Sox Could Explore Reunion With Nathan Eovaldi

The Red Sox may consider trading for Texas Rangers starter Nathan Eovaldi this offseason as they look for pitching help. Eovaldi has one season remaining on his contract, at $24 million for 2027.
Boston could need another starting pitcher this winter if Sonny Gray departs in free agency. Brayan Bello is the leading in-house option, but the Red Sox could also look beyond the organization, with Texas potentially willing to discuss trades involving Eovaldi and other high-paid players.
Eovaldi, who previously pitched for Boston and was part of its 2018 World Series-winning team, has posted a 3.40 ERA across 103 appearances with Texas since 2023. He has also delivered in the postseason, with a 3.05 ERA in 17 playoff appearances.
His results have varied recently: Eovaldi recorded a 1.73 ERA in 22 appearances in 2025, then finished 2026 with a 4.20 ERA over 27 appearances. He stayed generally healthy during the latest season. A potential trade could offer Boston an experienced arm, and his one year left under contract may limit the acquisition cost.
The main drawback is the short-term commitment. Eovaldi is due $24 million in 2027 and would become a free agent afterward, potentially leaving Boston to seek another replacement the following offseason.
