Lakers Rookie Cameron Carr Says Family Still Teases His Father

Lakers rookie Cameron Carr said his family regularly jokes with his father, former NBA player Chris Carr, about losing the 1997 All-Star dunk contest to Kobe Bryant. Cameron shared the story in an interview published on November 4, 2026.
Cameron Carr said his family has made a running joke of his father Chris’s runner-up finish behind Bryant at the 1997 Slam Dunk Contest. Chris played six NBA seasons, but the contest is the moment his son says the family continues to bring up.
Cameron recalled discovering the footage while he was in elementary school. After seeing it repeatedly, he said, he now laughs whenever it appears. His sister once used an image of Bryant with the trophy in a birthday message to their father, and relatives still circulate it in their group chat each year.
Chris played for six teams, including the Boston Celtics, Chicago Bulls, Golden State Warriors, New Jersey Nets, Minnesota Timberwolves and Phoenix Suns. Cameron is beginning his own NBA career with the Lakers after the Knicks selected him 24th in the 2026 draft and later traded him to Los Angeles.
The 21-year-old guard drew attention during Summer League. He has appeared in two games this season without recording a statistic, and will try to earn a regular place in the Lakers’ rotation.
