Rich Paul Says Philadelphia Offered LeBron James a Better Path to Win

On a recent podcast, agent Rich Paul said the Philadelphia 76ers offered LeBron James a chance to compete alongside capable teammates in roles suited to his current stage of his career, unlike the Los Angeles Lakers.
Published on November 4, 2026, the discussion revisited James’ decision to leave the Lakers for Philadelphia, a move that continues to draw attention months after it was made. Paul spoke about the choice with Max Kellerman on their “Game Over” podcast.
Paul said that in the later years of a long career, a player who still has something to contribute can benefit from joining other high-level players and taking on a role that offers a genuine chance to win, rather than trying to perform as he once did. Kellerman said the Lakers could not offer that kind of situation, and Paul agreed that it was among the reasons James chose the 76ers.
Paul also praised the Lakers’ offseason work, saying the team added useful players around Luka Dončić after James departed. James has appeared to be enjoying his play in Philadelphia, while the Lakers have also played better basketball than they did at points last season, aided by their new roster additions.
Both teams currently lead their respective divisions, making the move look beneficial to each so far. The season is still underway, however, and their standing could change as more games are played.
