Monken Demands Better Composure After Browns’ Loss to Steelers

Browns coach Todd Monken said on November 2 that Cleveland must improve its discipline and execution after a loss to Pittsburgh, with New Orleans next on the schedule.
After Cleveland’s loss to Pittsburgh, Todd Monken used his Monday press conference on November 2 to call for greater composure and better play. The Browns had entered the AFC North matchup 5-2, with a chance to reach 6-2 and stay undefeated in the division. Instead, they struggled on offense, gave up eight sacks and made costly penalty mistakes.
Monken said the penalties reflected a failure to stay composed, and stressed that the team’s performance must back up its words. He did not single out one player for the sacks, saying the protection problems involved the whole team. He cited breakdowns in protection, play calling and quarterback Deshaun Watson’s ability to release the ball.
Cleveland also failed to build a steady running game after falling behind. Monken said the coaching staff must improve its scheme and preparation, while players need to execute better. He added that the Browns had struggled to stop the run in recent weeks and must address that issue.
Despite the defeat, Monken said the team has room to improve and should not let one game define its season. He said Cleveland would review what needs fixing, return to practice on Wednesday and work toward a stronger performance against New Orleans.
