Steelers Defense Powers 6-2 Start

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ defense helped lift the team to a 6-2 record through eight games, including a strong showing against Cleveland in Week 8.
On November 3, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ defense was emerging as a central reason for the team’s 6-2 start to the 2026 season. Its performance against the Cleveland Browns in Week 8 continued a pattern of creating chances and helping Pittsburgh stay competitive when the offense struggled.
Defensive coordinator Patrick Graham has varied the unit’s pre-snap looks, adjusted during games and shifted key players around. He also shifted from directing play in the press box to working at field level after the season’s first few games. His physical, hands-on approach has helped set the tone for the defense, which has been described as adaptable and aggressive.
Pittsburgh’s pressure comes from both its outside linebackers and defensive line. T.J. Watt has recorded 5.5 sacks, Alex Highsmith has 3.5 and Nick Herbig has 3.0. Despite injuries to two important defensive-line players, the group has continued to disrupt opposing quarterbacks.
Through Week 8, the Steelers led the NFL with 26 sacks and ranked third in takeaways. The defense has fueled the team’s early success and raised expectations that Pittsburgh could contend for the Super Bowl. The season is still underway, but the unit’s performance has invited comparisons with some of the strongest defenses in Steelers history.
