Packers Sign Edge Rusher D.J. Johnson to Practice Squad

The Green Bay Packers signed former Carolina Panthers edge rusher D.J. Johnson to their practice squad on November 3, adding the 2023 third-round pick after a workout.
Green Bay added D.J. Johnson to its practice squad on November 3, bringing the former Carolina Panthers third-round selection into its edge-rusher group. Johnson was one of five players who worked out for the Packers before they chose to sign him. He has starting experience but has not appeared in an NFL game since 2025.
Carolina selected Johnson 80th overall in 2023, two picks after Green Bay drafted tight end Tucker Kraft. As a rookie, Johnson played in 13 games and started three. He appeared in 14 games in 2024, starting twice and making 44 tackles, along with half a sack. The Panthers released him after four games in 2025.
Johnson spent training camp with Washington this year but did not make its 53-player roster. Washington had him on its practice squad for the season’s opening two weeks.
At Oregon, Johnson recorded six sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss in his final college season. Listed at 6-foot-4 and 260 pounds, he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.49 seconds at the NFL Scouting Combine. He also played tight end in 2020, catching 10 passes for 113 yards and three touchdowns, before concentrating on defense in 2022.
Former Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer praised Johnson’s physical traits and potential when Carolina drafted him, while identifying development and coaching as important to his progress. Johnson has said he worked to improve his technique and pass-rush skills. He will now look to earn an opportunity with Green Bay from its practice squad.
