Colts Rookies Face Growing Pains as Roles Shift

The Indianapolis Colts’ 2026 draft class has produced mixed results through eight games, with injuries and roster changes opening opportunities for several rookies. Some could take on larger roles during the rest of the season.
On November 3, the Colts’ rookie class had seen a mix of early opportunities and limited production through Indianapolis’ first eight games. With the team looking toward the future, the remaining schedule could help clarify which young players are ready for bigger roles.
Linebacker CJ Allen made his first start against Jacksonville after injuries disrupted his preseason and early season. He led Indianapolis with 10 tackles, added a tackle for loss and recorded his first NFL sack. Safety AJ Haulcy, by contrast, has started all eight games but has 22 tackles and two passes defended. His Pro Football Focus grade of 39.8 ranks 97th among 98 qualifying safeties.
Guard Jalen Farmer entered the lineup in Week 8 after Quenton Nelson was traded to Seattle. Farmer showed some of the power that attracted Indianapolis, though the offensive line struggled without Nelson. Linebacker Bryce Boettcher has 25 tackles in six games and could return to a regular rotation after recovering from injury. Defensive linemen George Gumbs Jr. and Caden Curry have had limited production; Curry’s season-best outing included seven tackles and a fumble recovery against Jacksonville.
Running back Seth McGowan has gained 163 yards on 37 carries, averaging 4.4 yards, and his role has grown. If Jonathan Taylor is traded, McGowan could become the lead back. Receiver Deion Burks has eight touches for 81 yards, with three first downs. A possible trade involving Josh Downs before the November 10 deadline could create more work for Burks in the slot. His opportunities, like those of the other rookies, may depend on how Indianapolis’ roster changes unfold.
Players: Quenton Nelson, Jonathan Taylor, Josh Downs, CJ Allen, A.J. Haulcy, George Gumbs Jr., Caden Curry, Seth McGowan, Deion Burks, Jalen Farmer, Bryce Boettcher
