Lions Open Two Roster Spots After Fitzgerald, Rolder Moves

On November 3, Detroit opened two roster spots by releasing defensive back Bishop Fitzgerald and placing rookie linebacker Jimmy Rolder on injured reserve. K.J. Britt is expected to fill one opening.
Detroit’s roster moves followed a hamstring injury that Rolder suffered in the second half against Minnesota. The injury ends the rookie linebacker’s season. The Lions are also without linebacker Jack Campbell, leaving Trevor Nowaske, Malcolm Rodriguez, Amen Ogbongbemiga and Derrick Barnes as possible options to help at the position.
Fitzgerald had struggled to find playing time as defensive backs returned to the lineup. Brian Branch is back, while Thomas Harper is expected to return soon. Rookie Keith Abney and veteran safety Chuck Clark have handled duties in the secondary. Branch left the Minnesota game with a head injury.
Safety Kerby Joseph is practicing, but coach Dan Campbell said during a weekly radio interview that Joseph would not play against Miami on the road.
K.J. Britt is set to sign with Detroit for one of the open spots after spending time on New England’s practice squad. The Lions could use a veteran from their own practice squad for the other vacancy; Joe Bachie drew attention for his training-camp performances.
Linebacker Owen Pappoe also tried out for Detroit. The 26-year-old played at Auburn from 2019 to 2022 and has primarily contributed on special teams in the NFL. Arizona selected him in the fifth round of the 2023 draft. He was waived before the 2026 season, claimed by Tennessee, and released by the Titans in early October.
