Three Speed Rushers Who Could Fit the 49ers

On November 4, three edge rushers were identified as possible trade-deadline fits for the San Francisco 49ers under coach Raheem Morris. The candidates are Will McDonald, Nolan Smith and K’Lavon Chaisson.
San Francisco’s defense under Raheem Morris makes greater use of quick edge defenders capable of taking on pass-coverage duties. That approach differs from the team’s previous preference for bigger, stronger edge defenders who can also move inside on passing plays. Romello Height, drafted for the current scheme, is a smaller player than Mykel Williams and Keion White.
Will McDonald of the New York Jets is one possible target. He has recorded 18.5 sacks over the past two seasons and three so far this year. He could be a short-term addition, leaving room for Height’s development.
Philadelphia Eagles defender Nolan Smith has four sacks this season and is in year four of his original rookie agreement. A team acquiring him could retain him next season through his fifth-year option. Smith is a Super Bowl winner and an Eagles starter, and could also serve as a mentor to Height.
The third option is Washington Commanders edge rusher K’Lavon Chaisson, 27. He has 3.5 sacks this season, following 7.5 in the regular season with New England last year and three more during the Patriots’ playoff run. His limited run defense has contributed to his movement among teams, but his recent sack production and playoff experience make him a potential rental.
