Josh Downs Is the 49ers’ Most Logical Receiver Trade Target

On November 4, the San Francisco 49ers had reason to consider pursuing Indianapolis Colts receiver Josh Downs, while avoiding an excessive price.
The San Francisco 49ers have been linked to possible wide receiver moves amid injuries at the position, but Josh Downs is the trade target that makes the most sense. Several injured receivers could return within a week or two, making the position less urgent than some fans believe.
The 49ers have already checked with the Minnesota Vikings about Jauan Jennings. A major deal for Garrett Wilson seems unlikely because the New York Jets are not budging. Downs, with the Indianapolis Colts, could be a more attainable option who would add a deep threat to San Francisco’s offense.
Downs’ speed could open space for other players. Defenses would also have to account for Mike Evans, Demarcus Robinson, Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle and Deebo Samuel. Downs is not a top-tier receiver, but he could make an impact in that group.
San Francisco recently made a deal with Indianapolis to reunite with DeForest Buckner, which could provide a reason to contact the Colts again. A fifth-round pick could be a reasonable offer, since Downs’ rookie deal expires after this season.
Indianapolis could be willing to trade players before the November 10 deadline, though interest from other teams could raise Downs’ price. If the 49ers have to overpay, they should put those resources toward an edge rusher instead. The receiver need can be managed, particularly if San Francisco adds another pass rusher.
Players: Mike Evans, DeForest Buckner, Demarcus Robinson, Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle, Deebo Samuel Sr., Jauan Jennings, Garrett Wilson, Josh Downs
