Jets’ D’Angelo Ponds Faces Uncertain Role After Week 8 Bench

The New York Jets gave rookie cornerback D’Angelo Ponds one defensive snap in their Week 8 loss to the Raiders, after he started against Miami in Week 7. At 2-6, the team faces questions about his playing time heading into Week 9.
Ponds, a second-round pick, was sidelined by an injury during preseason preparations and the opening stretch of the season. He made his first NFL start against the Dolphins in Week 7, allowing one catch for five yards on three targets, but was also called for pass interference in the end zone.
The Jets then used him for just one defensive snap against Las Vegas. Jarvis Brownlee Jr. started in the slot instead, giving up three catches on four targets, including a touchdown, and drawing two penalties.
Coach Aaron Glenn believes Brownlee gives the team its best chance to succeed on the field. Brownlee had also been benched in Week 7 after arriving late to multiple meetings.
With the Jets at 2-6, the team may reassess the cornerback rotation as the trade deadline approaches. Ponds could receive more opportunities, including on the boundary, where he played in college. Brownlee is viewed as a possible short-term option while the Jets evaluate their rookie.
